5 tips to make moving house less stressful

Home Cleaning Perth

It’s said that moving house is one of the most stressful things we will encounter in our lives. It can be an unpleasant experience going through both the emotional and physical aspects of moving and the prospect of going to a new place is often overshadowed by this burdensome process.

But moving house doesn’t have to be stressful, so we’ve come up with 5 tips to make moving far more enjoyable:

1. Start packing early

If you start getting prepared and packing up early, you’ll be far more relaxed than if you were to leave everything to the last minute. Get in touch with your real estate agent and ask for a checklist of everything you need to do before you move out. Then every night just pack a box or 2 while you have something playing on the TV.

2. Buy 2nd hand boxes

Moving house can be super expensive (and a little stressful when you see your bank balance dwindling) so get your hands on some second hand/used boxes to save money. See if you can salvage your old TV boxes, even check in with your neighbours and ask if they have any spares on hand. You can even ask your workplace, they often throw out unwanted stationary boxes which are perfect for moving house. And a bonus tip: be sure to label your boxes well. You will be grateful you did this at the other end, especially if you place your items in storage for a while and need to make several trips (as well as spend several hours) searching for that one item you swore you packed in box A.

You will be surprised at how much stuff you’ve accumulated over the years when you start packing up your house. Instead of being concerned about where you will put it in your new home or how you’re going to fit in in your moving boxes, have a garage sale! You’ll make some money in the process and will eliminate stress at the other end when you unpack only those necessary items. Another great place to sell your unwanted items is ebay and gumtree.

4. Hire a moving company ASAP

Don’t delay on this one. Find the top 3 – 5 companies and call around for the best price. Once you’ve found your guys, book them in! If you wait until the last minute, not only will it cause stress trying to find someone but you may end up paying a fortune for an urgent booking. Only hire your own moving van if you have the time and people to help you – this can be a stressful way to move otherwise. And you’re better off paying a little more to have a stress-free and easy move. Let the professionals take care of it for you.

5. Notify everyone of your move

Make a list of utilities and anyone else that needs to be notified of your move. Then, as you get in contact with them all, you can check them off. Be sure to change your address for magazine subscriptions, credit card companies and any online websites that may bill you from time to time. You can also get in contact with the Australian Post Office to help you out as they have a great mail redirection service which can contact companies on your behalf.

  • Proper packing materials make all the difference in ensuring your items arrive in tact. If you have fragile items (like dishes, china, frames or figurines), invest in special boxes and paper for transporting such things. Wrap furniture, especially painted furniture, in plastic wrap or blankets to prevent nicks and scratches.

  • Moving house is a great time to cull belongings that are no longer needed or won’t suit the new home. Take the opportunity to throw out, sell or give away old clothes, children’s toys, books, magazines, furniture and anything else that doesn’t make the short list of beloved possessions. Having a yard sale serves the dual purpose of lightening your moving load as well as bringing in some extra funds to help pay the remove-list when it’s time to move.
