Herbs and vegetables: Grow your own

herbs and vegetables: grow your own

The simple herb… Who would have thought it packed so much punch!  If you are considering implementing the ‘garden to kitchen’ concept then herbs are the best way to start. Not only are they super easy to grow (they only need a small pot but you can also pop them into a garden bed) but they also taste amazing, smell amazing and wait for it…..they are highly medicinal! Ohhhh yeah!

So if you’re thinking of getting started this Autumn here are some great herbs to plant that are suitable to our Mediterranean Perth climate:  Chives, Coriander, Marjoram, Oregano, Mustard, Parsley.

Some of their benefits (apart from looking lovely in the garden):

CHIVES:

Valuable for stimulating digestive juices and can help combat high blood pressure.

PARSLEY:

For the morning after a big curry…parsley has long been used as a breath freshener.  It’s high in Vitamin C. It also contains chlorophyll which is a valued detoxifier and blood builder.

CORIANDER:

Hmmm you either love it or you hate it.  We are camp LOVE IT here at All Pure Cleaning.  It’s high in dietary fibre, manganese, iron and magnesium. Plus it tastes delicious. I actually eat it every day because I grow it in my garden (it’s great in smoothies, juices and in salads). My guinea pigs also approve hehe.

Don’t forget your vegetables, because we all need our 5 serves a day!:

If you are thinking of growing your own veggies then Autumn in Perth is the best time to grow these varieties: broccoli, beetroot, potatoes, red onion, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower, silver beet, celery, broad beans and English spinach.  Also; citrus, avocado and olive trees.

You don’t need big spaces, just make sure you use good quality soil that is nutrient dense to give your herbs and veggies the best chance to grow strong and healthy and fight disease (we are HUGE fans of Green Life Soil Company here in Perth for the best soil you can get!).

Vegetables love well drained soil too so if you are planting directly into a garden bed, consider building up the garden bed with plenty of compost and fertiliser.  If you are planting in pots, try and use a potting mix with good drainage.

Keep your little garden treasures healthy and nourished by applying a diluted blood and bone or fish/kelp treatment every 2 weeks.  Five or more hours of sun is good as a general guide.

We hope you have fun planting and enjoy eating your home-grown goodness.
